While riding the subway today I had the thought: "everyone on this subway will be dead 100 years from now give or take a few!" I then thought about how I share the earth right now with the people I see in front me." 100 years from now there will be a new group of people sharing the earth. They will be sitting in these seats, reading their newspaper on their way downtown.
Now I'm not trying to sound morbid in fact I was fascinated by the thought. In some ways thinking that way was very freeing. For example, what's the point wasting your time worrying about what someone thinks of you if that person will pretty much leave the earth around the same time you do? They will not escape death no matter how much you think they are more together than you are.
It also made me think about how I spend my time. What really matters to me? How do I want to spend my time? It is so easy to operate on automatic pilot as one day melts into the next. The truth (we will all be dead in 100 years) helps us gain perspective. We can now come from a meaningful place when we choose how to spend our time. If we are going to be dead in 100 years, do we really want to sit around and watch television all day or is there something in the world we would like to learn more about? Is there some place we want to visit? Do we want to spend more time with our children and less time with our faces in our blackberries?
My suggestion? Anything you can do that helps pull you back to the moment and out of your head is worth doing! John Kabat-Zinn talks about just being. Stop all the doing and just be for a little while. I find that when I do it frees me up.
Find out what works for you. What helps you to "just be?"
